City 1. The Bridge Over The River Kwae
Internationally famous bridge, as part of the Death Railway linking Thailand with Myanmar, was built by Allied prisoner-of-war labour under Japanese Supervision in the World War II. The Bridge, which spans the Kwae Yai River at Thamakham Sub-District, about from TAT about 5 kms.
City 2. Art Gallery And War Museum
Located on the bank of Kwae Yai River near the Bridge Over The River Kwae. This private museum collects lots of the Second World War story and art gallery such as war instruments, army uniforms, photographs, jewelry etc., open daily from 07.00-18000 admission fee: 30 baht / person.
City 3. Kanchanaburi War Cemetery
The cemetery contains the remains of 6,982 Allied prisoners of war who perished during the construction of the 'Death Railway". Its on Saengchuto Rd. opposite the Railway Station, far from TAT office about 1.5 kms., open daily 08.30-18.00
City 4. JEATH War Museum
Situated about 500 m. from TAT office in the area of Chai Chumphon Temple. The bamboo hut has been constructed in the form of a prisoner of war camp, contains photographic, pictorial and physical memorabilia dating from the World War II. Open daily 08.30-17.30, admission fee 30 baht I person.
City 5. Chongkai War Cemetery
3 kms. from TAT office, on the bank of Kwae Noi River. This occupies the former site of the Chong Kai Prisoner of War Camp. This second cemetery is smaller and more peaceful, contains 1,750 remains most of English prisoners of war.
City 6. Wat Tham Khaopoon
This Buddhist temple was a big camp of prisoners of the World War II. There is a middle cave containing stalactites and stalagmites and many beautiful Buddha images, behind the temple is Kwae Nol River, 3 kms. from Chongkai War Cemetery and 6 kms. far from TAT.
City 7. Somdet Phra Sri Nakharin Park
Located in Kanchanaburi Agriculture College, about 9 kms. from town. It is known as "Stone Garden" covering 200 ral, since most of its area are scattered with stone fledge from the ground in different size and shape similar to animals.
City 8. Wat Tham Mungkornthong
7 kms. from TAT office, this Buddhist temple has 2 dragon images on both of stair lines lenghten to the end of the way to get in a small cave. The temple is famous for "Floating Woman Show" which do not fix time, depends on number of tourist. To see the show, donate 10 baht / person.
City 9. Giant Tree
Situated in the area of Veterinary and Agricultural Division 1. about 20 kms. from TAT office by the way to Dan Makhamtia District. A very large Jamjuree (the silk tree). with the age of more than 100 years., it takes about 10 people with arms streached out to reach around it.
City 10. Wat Ban Tham
5 kms. from Wat Tham Sua on the way to Kanchanaburi town. Stair to the cave go n to a mouth of a big dragon. There is a stone shape that looks like a woman inside the cave. The villagers believe that she is "Ms. Bua Khlee" one of Khun Phaen's wifes in a historical legend of Kanchanaburi.
City 11. Wat Tham Sua
Situated about 18 kms. from Kanchanaburi town and 6 kms. from Vachiralongkorn Dam. The monastery was constructed in the form of Thai cultural art, the great Buddha image and pagoda placed in the temple are respected to all Buddhists.
City 12. Wat Tham Khao Noi
Located near War Tham Suam. The monastety was constructed on the hill, decorated in the form of Chinese architecture and cultural art. Vistors can walk up to the top of the monastery to see beautiful scenery of Karichanaburi town.
City 13. Kuan Yum
Located about 15 kms. from Kanchanaburi town by U-Thong Road, highway no. 324. A big Kuan Yum Statue was constructed beautifully in Wat Thung Samor to be the representative of Lord Buddha.
City 14. Don Chedi Archaeological Site
Situated in Ban Don Chedi. In 1982, the Fine Art Department conducted an exploration of the site and discovered 100 human skeletons, ancient swords, elephant jaw bones. Also found at this site were the remains of a chedi from the Ayutthaya period.
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS in Kanchanaburi Province
Muang District
1. Ban Kao National Museum
35 km's from Kanchanaburi town, it was constructed beside a Neolithic burial site discovered by an Allied prisoner of World War II. The museum houses skeleton remains, pot, axe heads, jewellery made from animal bones etc. Open from 09.00 - 16.30, closed on Monday and Tuesday.
2. Khao Chonkai
20 km's from Kanchanaburi town by highway no. 3199, the Army Student Camp open for tourist to travel and enjoy many army sports such as tower jumping, shooting, model cliff climbing etc. contract in advance tel. 0-3458-9237.
3. The Nine-Army Battle Historial Park
40 km's from Kanchanaburi town, the park that concerns The Nine - Army Battle, the great and important battle between Thai - Myanmar. The park is served as a center of historical research and conservative tourism. It provides the historical data, observation tower on a hill, diorama shows and sound table displays the supposed avenue of approach of enemy troops.
Saiyoke District
4. Muang Sing Historical Park
43 km's from Kanchanaburi town by highway no. 323 (Kanchanaburi - Saiyoke Road) and turn left at the 15 km. marker, drive 7 km's at the highway no. 3455 and you are there. "Prasat Muang Sing", Historical Park is being renovated by the Fine Art Department to display the Khmer influenced architecture toward this part of Thailand during the late Lopburi period some 700-800 years ago (16-18 B.E.)
5. Krasae Cave
Situated at the via-duct side of the Death Railway (Kanchanaburi - Namtok Train Station) on the bank of Kwae Noi River (River Kwai Noi), it's beautiful scenery, 55 km's out of Kanchanaburi town. This cavern houses a Buddha image.
6. Wangbadan Cave
63 km's out of Kanchanaburi town, and 3 km's behind the Saiyoke Noi Waterfall. There is a stream with white fish inside the cave.
7. Sai Yoke Noi Waterfall
2 km's from the Nam Tok Train Station and about 62 km's from Kanchanaburi town. During the rainy season (july - October) is the most beautifull and best period to visit this waterfall. Daily train trips from Bangkok to Nam Tok Train Station are served (This is also the end station).
8. Lawa Cave
75 km's away from the Kanchanaburi city center and about 50 meters from the riverside of Kwae Noi (River Kwai Noi). Boat trip can be hired from the Paksaeng Pier or one could be going there by car across the bridge at Ban Kaengraboed. It's the biggest interresting cave of the area, the stalactites and stalagmites are so wonderfull and speculiar by nature creation.
9. Hellfire Pass
The "Hellfire Pass" is a part of the Death Railway cut through the stone mountain during World War II, it's located near the 66 km. marker on highway no. 323 (Saiyoke - Thongphaphum Road), about 80 km's from Kanchanaburi town. There are walking trail along the route of the Death Railway (up to 4 km.) and also a museum displayed to commemorate the unforgetable history of the World War II. Open daily 09.00 - 16.00
10. Saiyoke Yai Waterfall
The "Saiyoke Yai Waterfall" is a part of the Saiyoke National Park, about 104 km. from downtown Kanchanaburi on highway no. 323 (Kanchanaburi - Saiyoke - Thongphaphum Road). The falls is different from other waterfalls as it runs from the cliff directly into the Kwae Noi River (River Kwai Noi).
11. Daowadueng Cave
The Daowadueng Cave are to be found about 110 km. from Kanchanaburi on highway no. 323 (Kanchanaburi - Saiyoke - Thongphaphum Road) and around 1 km. from the banks of the Kwae Noi River (River Kwai Noi). Visitors can go by car or they can go by boat from Paksaeng Pier or even from the Saiyoke Yai Waterfall. Daowadueng Cave has many stalactites and stalagmites inside which makes the view in the cave wonderful and it naturally create a beautiful scenery.
ThongPhaPhum District
12. Hindad Hot Springs
If you want to visit the "Hindad Hot Springs" it is 130 km. from Kanchanaburi on highway no. 323 (Kanchanaburi - Saiyoke - Thongphaphum Road) while on the highway you pass the 107 km. maker, then turn right and go on for around 1 km. The natural hot springs which flows near cold stream was discovered by some Japanese soldiers during World War II. Vistors can shower in this pond too.
13. Pha Tad Waterfall
The Pha Tad Waterfall is a big waterfall that is located in the area of Srinakharin Dam National Park. It is to be found 140 km. from Kanchanaburi on highway no. 323 (Kanchanaburi - Saiyoke - Thongphaphum Road) while on the highway you pass the 105 km. maker, then turn right and go on for around 12 km. to get to the Pha Tad Waterfall.
14. Pha Sawan Waterfall
The distance from "Pha Sawan Waterfall" to Kanchanaburi is about 155 km. in the same direction as the Pha Tad Waterfall. It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Kanchanaburi (Thailand). Can though be hard to get to, may need 4WD driving. The 7 tiered Pha Sawan Waterfall, with water falling around 80 meter and it is most beautifull during July - January.
15. Khao Laem Dam
The Khao Laem Dam is also around 155 km. from Kanchanaburi on highway no. 323 (Kanchanaburi - Saiyoke - Thongphaphum Road) found on the left hand side while coming from Kanchanaburi. This hydro - electric dam is built on the Kwae Noi River (River Kwai Noi), it is a scenic reservoir and where is a beautiful scenery on the lake, many resorts in form or raft houses can be found here.
SangKhlaBuri District
16. Kroengkrawia Waterfall
Kroengkrawia Waterfall is a small waterfall there is located near the road to SangKhlaBuri, about 190 km. from Kanchanaburi on highway no. 323 (Kanchanaburi - Saiyoke - Thongphaphum - Songkhlaburi Road). This waterfall is good for relaxing along a journey to the SangKhlaBuri District.
17. Dai Chong Thong Waterfall
Dai Chong Thong Waterfall is located near the Kroengkrawia Waterfall, turn left from the highway about 2 km. further on from where the Kroengkrawia Waterfall was found, and then walk about 600 m. to the waterfall. It's a rather big waterfall which runs into the lake of Khao Laem Dam.
18. Takhian Thong Waterfall
The Takhian Thong Waterfall is a many-tiered beautiful is about 250 km. from town Kanchanaburi bythe road (highway no. 323) to the Three Pagodas Pass. One will have to drive in 10 km. to the right from the highway (look after the signs), the after that one will have to walk on foot for about 40 km. to come to the Takhian Thong Waterfall.
19. Sawan Bundan Cave
This beautiful cave is located on the way to Three Pagodas Pass and turn right about 1 km. to the cave. It's maintained by monks.
20. Three Pagodas Pass
240 kms. out of the city and 22 kms. from Sangkhlaburi town, the 3 miniature pagodas are memorials of the important routing of the troop during the war time of Ayutthaya period, borders between Thai-Myanmar and famous for the border market. Visitors are allowed to enter Myanmar but foreigners can't get stamp or extend new visa.
21. Wat Wangwiwekaram
Situated on the hill far from town about 220 kms., the monastery abbot "Laung Pho Uttama" is highly respected among Thais, Mons, Karens and Burmeses. The pagoda was built in the style similar to Phra Phutta Khaya in India. The temple houses a huge Buddha image made of marble.
22. Mon Bridge
The longest wooden bridge in Thailand, was built for comfortable transportation of people living in Sangkhlaburi and Mon Village.
Bo Phloi District
23. Erawan Waterfall
65 kms. from town by Kanchanaburi - Sri Sawat Road (3199). The 7-tiered Erawan Waterfall, widely regarded as being one of Thailand's loveliest cascades, is in the area of the Erawan National Park and good for trekking.
24. Sri Nakharin Dam
70 kms. from town and 5 kms. north of Erawan Waterfall, this impressive hydro-electric power plant project is situated on Kwae Yai River. Above the dam site, there is a beautiful wide lake with ntural surroundings and good for fishing.
25. Phra That Cave
A big cave on the mountain, 76 kms. from town and 10 kms. north of Erawan Waterfall. The spectacular cave contains very beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. Visitors should arrive there before 03.00 pm. and contact the forestry staff before enter the cave.
26. Neramit Cave
100 kms. from town, 10 kms. before Huay Maekhamin Waterfall turn left about 2 kms. and go on foot about 300 m. to the spectacular cave that contains very beautiful and different shapes of stalactites and stalagmites. Visitors should contact the forestry staff before climb into the cave.
27. Huay Maekhamin Waterfall
108 kms. from town and 50 kms. from Erawan Waterfall, near the Sri Nakharin lakeside. This waterfall is famous for its very beauty. Visitors can go by 4-wheeled drive car, by boat or by ferry.
28. Chalerm Rattana Kosin National Park
97 kms. from town along highway no.3086. There are beautiful caves and waterfalls Than Lod Noi Cave, Than Lod Yai Cave, Trai Trueng Waterfall, Than Ngoen Waterfall and Than Thong Waterfall.
29. Safari Park
35 kms. from town by Kanchanaburi - Bophloi Road (3086>. The open zoo, where visitors will enjoy seeing and feeding various species of rare animals in their natural habitats. Open daily from 09.00-17.00, tourists can travel in the park by their own cars or by bus service.
Nongprue District
30. Huay Ongkot Royal Project
130 kms. from town, the project is planed to develop and preserve Ongkot basin. The area consists of the Royal Residence, the excavation of ancient and archaeological materials and utensils during Neolithic era are also displayed.
Thamaka District
31. Phong Tuk Archaeological Site
38 kms. to the south of town, and following the way to Wat Dong Sak. There is evidence to show that Kanchanaburi was a former area where a city of the Dvaravati period (6th - 7th Century BE) was established in 1927 (2470 BE), the Fine Art Department excavated many artefacts of the Amaravati and Dvaravati periods, such as a Roman bronze lamp and Buddha images.
32. Wat Phra Thaen Dong Rang
Situated about 10 kms. from Tharua Market and 40 kms. from town. The ancient Buddhist temple houses a sacred stone and Buddha's footprint it has been believed that the Lord Buddha has had illness here ' before his Nirvana (death).
